MICHIGAN WATER PLAN

Bipartisan Solution to Water Affordability in Michigan
Dedicated funding source. Comprehensive & administratively feasible. Supports infrastructure. Protects public health.
Residential water bills are increasing in every part of the state. Local water providers are required to provide safe, clean water and to manage wastewater and drainage. However, many low income customers struggle to keep up with the cost of water charges and bills leading some to choose between water, food, medication and other essentials. We can do better in Michigan! The water affordability bill package will allow struggling households to pay bills they can afford while ensuring that water providers can regain full payments through the establishment of a new state program and fund.
The proposed water affordability bills garner support from various stakeholders, including community advocates, health experts, economists, and environmentalists, as it aims to address water access disparities through income-based pricing, shutoff protections, assistance programs, and community engagement, potentially leading to improved social equity, public health, economic development, and environmental stewardship in the region.
